OUR STORY

We met by pure luck in Peru, South America when an incorrectly dated plane ticket was purchased and meant an overlap of dates. We moved in with each other immediately and continued living in Peru for another 6 months. We then moved back to our home of Australia and headed to the West where we lived in the stunning Margaret River, Western Australia for 2 years where we both worked in the wine industry. It was sitting together at the pub in Margs on a sunny Sunday afternoon having a few beers where our epiphany occurred and soon after, we headed back to our home state of NSW to reskill in our chosen industries of Interior Design and Carpentry.

Fast forward the clock over 10 years later and we now have a great little business, a 1950’s home in Orange, NSW we are lovingly renovating and two gorgeous little people, Winnie & Ralph, who keep us very busy and with very full hearts.

The Team

MICHAEL GAVEL

Michael is a jack of all trades – also quite a master of a lot as well. Michael studied Business and then went on to complete his Bachelor or Horticulture Management, majoring in Viticulture and an Advanced Diploma of Viticulture Management – graduating with Distinction and a Deans Award. After his own travel and living abroad, Michael & Rachael returned to Australia and moved to Margaret River where Michael worked hard as a Vineyard Manager and played hard surfing, rock climbing and hiking at any opportunity. On returning to the East Coast, Michael completed his mature age apprenticeship in Carpentry through Brookvale Tafe while working for some very skilled builders in the North Sydney area. Michael received an Excellence Award on graduation. After a brief dabble back in the wine industry in Orange, NSW, Michael returned to building and completed the additional study to obtain his builder's license. Michael now balances his time between a job at the mine, renovating our home, undertaking further study, and raising a young family. Michael is currently only available for small carpentry jobs.

RACHAEL GAVEL

Rachael originally studied and worked in Business Marketing but after travelling and living overseas and interstate and doing all manner of things (retail, ski boot technician, gardener, marketing manager, cellar door sales) Rachael began homing in on her passion and completed her Diploma in Interior Design & Decoration from Sydney Design School in 2011, receiving the Most Outstanding Student award at graduation. Rachael then went on to work for one of Australia’s leading furniture brands, Jardan; where her love of the natural, relaxed contemporary Australian style flourished. Rachael and Michael moved to Orange in 2014 and they officially joined forced to establish Holm & Wood in 2016, initially Rachael worked part time on the business and at the inspiring store, Jumbled where she loved being immersed in colour, creativity and Australian artist. After a couple of bubs over a couple of years and time dedicated to growing a family, Rachael officially kicked back off with Holm & Wood in September 2021 and is absolutely loving finally dedicating her time to Holm & Wood and her lovely client base…when not changing nappies, putting kids down for naps and making x100 meals a day etc.
